Proton Centers Around the World

Although proton therapy was used to treat patients in the middle of the 20th century, at first the method existed only in the framework of the experiment, in physical laboratories. The first clinical center for the treatment of cancer by protons was opened in 1990 in California, USA.

To date, according to the PTCOG data (Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group), 57 proton accelerators used for the treatment of diseases operate in the world, including facilities in scientific research institutes. Most of them work in the USA (19), Japan (12) and Germany (6). Another 37 centers with a period of commissioning in 2017-2021 are under construction. Most of the centers are being built in the United States (7), Great Britain (6) and China (6).

In Russia until recently there were only experimental devices in three physical research centers in Moscow, Moscow and Leningrad regions, specified in the PTCOG list.

The first in Russia and the CIS countries MIBS proton therapy center began to work in a test mode in September 2017 in St. Petersburg.
